Booking a family photography session is exciting, but we know it can also come with a few questions.
What should we wear? What if the kids don't cooperate? Do we need to know how to pose? And what actually happens once we get there?
The good news is that you don't need to worry about any of that. Our goal is to make your family photography session relaxed, fun, and as stress-free as possible. Here's what you can expect.
Before Your Session
Once your session is booked, we'll help you get ready.
We'll confirm the details of your session, including the location and timing, and we're always happy to answer questions along the way. If you're wondering what everyone should wear, we can also offer guidance on choosing outfits that photograph beautifully together without feeling overly coordinated.
The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and like themselves.
For outdoor sessions, we're also keeping an eye on the weather. Living in the Lower Mainland means a little flexibility sometimes comes with the territory! If the forecast isn't cooperating, we'll communicate with you and figure out the best plan.
When You Arrive
There's no need to show up knowing how to pose or wondering what to do with your hands—that's our job!
We'll guide you throughout the session, starting with simple setups that help everyone settle in and get comfortable in front of the camera.
We'll get some of those classic family portraits that you'll want to frame, but we also want to capture the little moments in between: the laughs, hugs, silly expressions, and interactions that make your family yours.
Some of our favourite photographs often happen when nobody is trying too hard.
What If My Kids Don't Cooperate?
This is probably one of the biggest concerns we hear from parents.
Here's the secret: your kids don't need to behave perfectly for us to get great photographs.
Kids are kids. They might be shy at first. They might want to explore. They might make silly faces, need a break, or decide that sitting still for a photograph is the last thing they want to do that day.
That's okay.
Rather than expecting children to smile at the camera for an entire session, we'll work with their personalities and energy. Sometimes that means playing a quick game, going for a little walk, getting some snuggles with Mom or Dad, or simply giving them a few minutes to warm up.
We want your photographs to feel like your family—not like everyone spent an hour being told to sit still.
You Don't Need to Know How to Pose
Most people aren't professional models, and we don't expect you to be!
We'll give you direction throughout the session so you never have to wonder what you're supposed to be doing. But instead of forcing everyone into stiff poses, we like to create situations where natural interactions can happen.
We might ask you to walk together, cuddle your kids, make each other laugh, or simply spend a few moments together while we photograph what unfolds.
The result is a mix of beautifully composed portraits and genuine, candid moments.
We'll Capture Different Combinations
Your session isn't just about getting one photograph of everyone looking at the camera.
Whenever possible, we'll capture a variety of images—your whole family together, the kids on their own, siblings together, and photographs of parents with their children.
These different combinations help tell a more complete story of your family and give you plenty of variety when choosing your favourites.
Most Importantly, Enjoy It
It's easy to arrive at a family photography session thinking about the end result: We need to get a good family photo.
But try not to put too much pressure on yourself—or your kids.
Instead, think of your session as a little bit of uninterrupted time together. Play with your kids. Hug them. Laugh with them. Let them be goofy.
Years from now, the photographs that mean the most probably won't be the ones where everything was absolutely perfect.
They'll be the ones that remind you what this stage of your family's life actually felt like.
And that's exactly what we're there to capture.
Ready for Your Family Session?
If you've been putting off family photos because you're worried your kids won't sit still, you don't know what to wear, or you feel awkward in front of the camera, don't let that stop you.
We'll guide you through the process so you can relax, enjoy your family, and leave the rest to us.
